One thing about apartment gardening to keep in mind is to never give up. When it comes to growing vegetables in tiny spaces, patience is definitely a virtue. I love to look back and celebrate success by reminding myself of the things I have achieved. These little milestones help me stay positive and upbeat about getting to where I want to be.
Since the end of January I have been planting my bak choi and cabbage seeds with no sign of them sprouting at all. I had bought the first packet of hybrid seeds (acclimatized to Singapore’s humid and 24/7 sunny weather) from an old and tired nursery. I suspected that my seeds were expired because the packets looked dusty and dirty, as if they have not been touched in years. I planted them anyway, and I was not surprised when they did not sprout.
I then went on a seed hunt all around Singapore and chanced upon fresh packets of seeds from publicly-owned local retailer Sheng Siong. I’m not a big fan of Sheng Siong’s food quality, but I figured it was worth a try. I planted those in, and by mid-February, my seedlings have begun to grow.
Most of them did not make it past three days of germination. One bakchoi and cabbage seedling each did, however. I protected them fiercely and handled them with such care, and within the next seven days they were looking stronger and better (left image). Look at them today! (right image)
I can’t wait for them to grow stronger in the next 7 weeks.
